Brooks

Brooks before   Brooks after

When our MMR members found this dog in the Brooklyn CACC shelter, they didn't know what to think. The shelter had him listed as a "Maltese-mix", but we knew only a pure Malt could end up so matted. And what a matted mess this boy was! We got him into foster with Sharon, who was able to arrange for a vet visit and groomer appointment that same day. Although this dog had been though many changes, he was as dear as he could be. The groomers dubbed him "Brooklyn" for his place of origin, and the name stuck. Nancy and her daughter, Amanda, were looking for a great dog to become part of their happy home. Brooks (his new nickname) was only too happy to oblige. Everyone was very lucky they found each other. Here is Brooks' "before" and "after".

Molly and Bandit

Molly and BanditWhat incredible beauties -- Molly & Bandit! Their former owner loved them to pieces, but realized that her career commitments would keep her away from them for a major part of each day. She knew this was unfair to two such incredible girls, so she contacted MMR. Within 12 hours of posting them, the perfect adopters sent in an application. Bob & Phyllis had been searching the internet for some time looking for another Maltese to share their lives with. They were amazed to realize that they could be blessed with two! Their Abigail, a very lovely ten year old Maltese, was willing to share her loving home, so the perfect match was made. Molly & Bandit now have a great home with a backyard and owners who are available for them most of the day. It can't get better than this!

Ollie

Ollie

Ollie was a petshop dog who had been bought in haste by parents trying to appease their young children. Very quickly they learned that (1) Maltese were not a breed for a busy family and (2) a puppy was a tremendous responsibility. In less than a week, they realized their mistake. Because petshops are in it for the profit, not for the welfare of the dogs, they were unable to return Ollie (and for that we are most grateful). The owners contacted MMR for placement. Two of our newest members at the time, Marty & Barbara, had both the time and commitment to train a young pup. Although their two Maltese, Bonnie & Clyde, needed a period of adjustment to get used to this interloper, it all worked out in the end. Ollie is now home forever and is destined to become a Certified Therapy Dog who will visit residents of retirement homes and hospitals who will benefit from Ollie's love of all beings. We are lucky to have met you, Ollie.

Mister

Mister

At eight years of age, Mister finally had lots of folks in his corner. He was found wandering the streets in October 2000 by a kind soul, but Mister could not get along with her 95 lb. rescued Lab, so she turned to Mister for help. Dale, a MMR member, took Mister in and immediately fell in love with this well behaved, loving and personality plus little guy. So Dale knew Mister deserved a special home. Jackie and John had been grieving over the loss of their dog, but saw Mister on the internet and they knew, too. Mister belonged with them. While the day was bittersweet for Dale, she lovingly gave Mister to Jackie and John -- another happy MMR adoption!

Maxim

Max  MAXIM

Maxim came from a loving home. But after four years, their lifestyle changed keeping them away from Maxim for long hours each day. They realized they could not give Maxim the love and attention he deserved. And Maxim is truly a lovebug! Maxim's family turned to MMR for help and we found Mary. When Mary met him that first day, it took her about 60 seconds to know she wanted to take him home. It took her neice, Clarissa, about 10. Maxim is now in his forever home with Mary, who now gets frequent visits from Clarissa. And Maxim is a mighty happy boy!

Busche

busche   busche  busche

Busche was found on Christmas Eve 2000 frozen to the ground in a backyard in New Jersey. Some Good Samaritans took him to a vet where it was discovered that he had a broken leg. Although his owners were found, they did not want to pay to have the surgery done and gave him up to MMR. Busche was six years old and so eager to please. All he wanted was love. The orthopedic surgery was hard, but Busche's foster family took such good care of him, giving him the time he needed to heal. They reluctantly (because he stole their hearts) placed him with Erika who spends most of her time with Busche by her side. Busche now has the unconditional love he always deserved. The first photo is Busche the first day we met him, the second is shortly after surgery and the third is his first meeting with Erika.

Keegan

Keegan

Keegan is one great senior dog. Despite being deaf, with some stiffness in his legs and badly deteriorated teeth, he never lost his heart or his love for humans. Because of his age and physical condition, we had little interest in dear Keegan. But Rebecca & Joyia are special people and they saw right way that Keegan was special, too. So they welcomed him with open arms and hearts into their happy family with three other dogs and two cats. Keegan is now home for good.

Kugel

kugel

Kugel is our little puddin'. A senior dog of indeterminant age, Kugel had dignity and determination -- he was DETERMINED not to be groomed! But Jo Ann, one of those dear souls who specializes in senior dogs, ran to the Bergen Co. shelter to get him for foster. Alas, we had no takers for this proud, elderly boy for such a long time. Until one day we did get a prospect, and then Jo Ann's teenage daughter, Sarah, spoke up -- "Please, don't let him go!" Jo Ann quickly agreed that their home had plenty of room to keep this unique soul. So we lost a foster, but Kugel, our tough little guy, was happily home.

Lilly

lillyLilly was just one year old, but had been bought by a family who had no clue about what a Maltese needs, particularly a pup. When our MMR member, Linda, arrived to evaluate Lilly, she knew she needed to get her out of that home. Lilly wore a choke chain and was tied to a kitchen door because, they said, she couldn't be housebroken. While she had not expected to foster, Linda left with Lilly in her arms to get her to safety. Luckily, we had an adopter waiting in the wings. Gail had lost her dog a few months earlier and was waiting patiently for a little girl to mend her heart. Lilly did exactly that, and was given a gentle hand and loving heart to guide her. Two very happy souls found each other.

Pearl

pearl   pearl

Pearl came to us from the Brooklyn CACC in early December 2000. They spayed her and took the best care they could, but Pearl's coat was thin and her breath was ghastly. Christine, Pearl's foster angel, didn't mind the smell because she loved Pearl from the first moment, and Christine administered antibiotics to heal the apparent infection in her mouth. Dear Pearl was very lucky to have two angels caring for her. Donna adopted her in January and quickly learned that Pearl had a rare condition called "ulcerative stomatites". Using the resources of both an allopathic and holistic vet, Donna worked very hard to relieve Pearl of the infection and discomfort this condition can bring. Pearl exhibited patience and grace through all the treatments and has improved day-by-day. She has found a wonderful home by a lake with Donna and Spike, a 13 year old Silkie, where she is slowly but surely becoming "Queen of the Castle". Here is Pearl the day we got her from the shelter and on St. Patrick's Day 2001. Quite an improvement both physically and psychically!

Radar

Radar

Radar was two times blessed. He was adopted as a pup by a loving owner whose circumstances changed and who could no longer care for him. She contacted MMR and was very concerned that this dear boy, now about 2 years old, get a terrific family to love and to love him. Rachel and Jeff were exactly that. They had waited to get a dog until they knew they had the time to devote to him. They investigated various breeds carefully and decided that a Maltese was right for them. They also decided that they wanted to provide a good home to a dog that needed one, rather than buy a pup. When they saw this little guy on the internet, Rachel and Jeff were smitten. And when they finally met Radar, they had no reservations. They brought Radar home to a joyous extended family "Welcome Home" party. They know, and Radar also seems to know, that this is where he was meant to be!

Sophia

Sophia

Sophia was brought to the Brooklyn CACC just before Thanksgiving. Such an incredible matted, mess -- the mats were so tight on her face, Sophia could barely see. But when Kelly went to the shelter to foster for MMR, all she saw was Sophia's beauty (hence the name). And Kelly's Sparky, also a Maltese and very particular about other dogs, was immediately smitten. It wasn't too long before Kelly knew what Sparky had known instantly -- Sophia had found her forever-after home. Here's Sophia as one of our Holiday 2000 screen-saver models.
