Guido

Cindy of Second Chance Pet Society pulled
Guido from a Long Island shelter. She contacted MetroMalts to help place him, but was able
to foster and vet him for us. Guido had been a stud dog for a backyard breeder who dumped
him at a shelter when started having health problems at five years of age. With a serious
heart murmur, Guido needed daily medication. He was never housebroken, but was quickly
trained by his foster Mom. Despite his background, Guido was a loving boy who was
searching for a warm lap and a loving home. He got both with a family who was so anxious
to meet him, they braved an early spring snowstorm to take him home. We are so thankful
that Second Chance was there to provide one for little Guido.

Spencer

Spencer's previous owner, at age 92, was
no longer able to care for him, so her family asked MetroMalts to find him a new home.
Spencer was our sweet-faced boy, who loved everyone. He had a slight heart murmur, but was
otherwise healthy and very playful. When Rita saw his photo on the internet, she fell in
love. She carried his photo with her until the day when she met him and he jumped into her
lap. He now has a new girlfriend named Thumper who comes to visit and play, Spencer's
favorite thing. Our little guy got the loving, happy home he always deserved.

Oliver

Oliver was taken in by the
Brooklyn CACC as a stray. The shelter contacted MetroMalts and asked that we foster and
place him. When some of our members went to pick him up, they saw such a matted, odd
looking little guy. But underneath that tangle of hair, they caught a glimpse of a
beautiful, sweet Maltese. For Rosemarie and Max it was love at first sight. Oliver needed
a lot of guidance in the housebreaking department, but, with patience, and love he got the
knack. And he has become so close to their first Maltese, Teddy, one would think they were
litter mates. This is one happy family! The pictures you see are Oliver "before"
as he looked in the shelter, and Oliver "after" a few weeks in his new home.
Quite an amazing transformation, don't you think?

Tofu Pup
Tofu Pup, as his foster family affectionately
named him, was found darting through a gas station last Thanksgiving Weekend. He was
matted, filthy, infested with fleas, and had a serious mouth odor which was caused by a
periodontal infection. Robert, Carol and Allison could see that under all that dirt and
stench, there was a beautiful little heart-warming angel! They decided to foster him -
nursing him back to health and fattening him up to the healthy 8 pound doggie that he is
today. Their love and care gave back years taken by his hard life as a stray. They were
told that Tofu was probably 12 years old. He has a heart murmur and had to have some teeth
removed. But now that he was loved back to health by them, his new vet says he's probably
only 8-10 years old!
Liz, Jerry & Sassy were
very grateful for their insight and care. Grieving the loss of Sassy's brother, Butter, a
feline, Liz found the picture of Tofu on the MetroMalts website and it was love at first
sight! Tofu now lives on Fire island with his forever-after family. He is a real Island
doggie. He barks at the surf, chases birds and LOVES walking the beach. He gets in a trail
and there's no stopping him. He loves his brother Sassy and is a real "pip"! It
was a match made in heaven for Liz, Jerry, Sassy and Tofu.

Sidney

Sidney is our first
"Honorary Maltese" Success Story. He was waiting at the Brooklyn CACC for a
home, when some of our group members, who are also CACC volunteers, took his photo for the
shelter's PetFinder page. Because he was so frightened and shy, Sidney did not show well
at the shelter and was passed up time after time for adoption. Two members of MetroMalts,
Rebecca and Joyia, had seen Sidney's photo and asked if they could foster and place him.
We listed Sidney on our MetroMalts site. Within a day, Sidney's new Mom who had thought
she might want a Maltese to adopt, saw his photo and was struck by his story. Rebecca and
Joyia knew this was the home for Sidney. He is now a new dog. He has even been to
obedience training and was voted best in his class. As you can see for Sidney's
"before" and "after" pictures, he has become a confident, gorgeous
dog. It's hard to believe that this gem was almost overlooked. He is one incredible boy!

| Kelley
Kelley, a senior girl, was
adopted from a shelter where she had been for about a month as a stray. This was
supposed to be the beginning of a new and better life for Kelley. Unfortunately,
that was not to be.
Kelley's adopter was away from home for up to ten hours each week day and could not afford
to have necessary dental work done, leaving the Kelley with infected and abscessed teeth
for many months. Because she was in so much pain, Kelley did not eat well and became
extremely thin. As we later learned, Kelley was deaf, blind in one eye and losing sight in
the other. Her new owner believed that Kelley suffered from separation anxiety as
Kelley barked the entire time she was alone. The owner mistakenly treated the
condition with medications and barking collars rather than investigating the reason for
Kelly's agitation. This poor little girl was in pain, frightened and rapidly
deteriorating. After nine months, the situation became critical when Kelley's owner
was threatened with eviction due to the constant barking. The owner turned to
MetroMalts for help in placing Kelley.
When Dale, a MetroMalts member, heard of Kelley's plight her heart broke. Dale had
tried to adopt Kelly from the shelter, but the first adopter had taken Kelley home only a
day before Dale could get there. Dale immediately agreed to take Kelley.
Dale has taken care of all Kelley's medical needs and is understanding of her
disabilities. Dale writes: "Kelley is no longer alone and no longer in
pain or afraid. She is here with our gang where she is loved and safe. She is
right in the middle of the pile of 'white fur' on the couch at night with me and has
become used to me coming and going with no more fear of being alone. Now that her
surgeries have been completed, she is on the mend. She is eating well and beginning
to put on weight, her hair is slowly growing in, but best of all.....she is HAPPY."
She might have taken the long road, but Kelley found her way home.

Mischief

Mischief, a beautiful 5 year
old Maltese, would sometimes live up to his name. His original family had to give him up
because Mischief was bad around children, as is common in this breed. Mischief also needed
to be the Number One and only pet. A special home was needed. Linda had recently lost her
Maltese named Sushee and was looking to fill the void. Despite his problems, Mischief was
a well behaved and loving boy who needed the proper environment to blossom. Now he lives
in a wonderful home and looks forward to rides in the car and trips on the boat with his
new Mom and Dad. He even has his own pillow on the couch. With their attention and care,
Mischief has become a terrific dog. He is keeping the name Mischief, but the tag no longer
applies now that he is finally home.

Adam
Adam is our
Millennium Miracle! He is a tiny tike, only about 4.5 lbs., who spent two weeks at the
Manhattan CACC after his owner had died. Unfortunately, his owner had not made plans for
his care, so Adam had to wait while the legal process was completed. The CACC contacted
MetroMalts on New Years Eve asking us to find a special home for little Adam. That we did.
Adam was nine years old, unaltered with a few remaining rotten teeth. We had him neutered
and dental work done. Over time he learned to eat, quite well we might add, with only two
teeth. But he was so timid and needed a quiet, loving home. He found it with Ilona and her
four senior cats. Ilona knew when she saw Adam's picture that she wanted to help him. Adam
is now happy, safe and loved. What a wonderful way to start the new millennium.

Caty
Caty was another stray left at the Brooklyn
CACC. She is an example of the many wonderful animals who are waiting for their
forever-after homes at shelters all over the country -- so please visit and support your
local shelter today! Caty was so extremely frightened in the shelter that she
refused to eat or drink, so the shelter staff asked that we foster and place her.
Caty is about 5 years old, but with horribly decayed teeth for a dog of her age.
Obviously her former owners did not give her the care she needed. Toy breeds are
very susceptible to dental problems and owners must take special care of their teeth.
When Caty walked into her foster home, she was a different dog. She was
lively and playful, definitely used to ruling the roost! We found the perfect home
with Janice and Malachy who are committed to caring for and pampering this little princess
for the rest of her life. And we know she deserves it.
